What is a Doula? & What Does That Mean for You in Paris?

If you’re preparing for birth in France, you might be wondering, “What exactly does a doula do?” Or perhaps you’re familiar with doulas but are unsure how that support fits within the French maternity system.

In France, the concept of doula care is not as widely recognized as it is in some other countries, and many hospitals do not yet allow doulas in the delivery room (yet!). But that doesn’t mean a doula can’t play an essential role in helping you feel confident, prepared, and fully supported throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey.

What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, informational, spiritual, and physical support throughout pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. Unlike a midwife or doctor, a doula is not a medical provider. Instead, their role is to:

  • Hold space for you as you navigate the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy and birth.

  • Provide knowledge and resources so you can make informed decisions about your care.

  • Offer non-medical support to help you feel grounded, confident, and prepared.

Birth is not just a medical event—it is a transformational experience. It's the birth of a Mother. Having a doula means having someone who is entirely focused on your well-being, your choices, and your experience.

Giving Birth in France: What You Need to Know

While some hospitals in Paris and throughout France have begun to welcome doulas, the majority do not currently allow doulas to attend births in medical settings (as of now).

So what does that mean for you?

  • If your hospital allows doulas, I can provide in-person labor support.

  • If your hospital does not allow doulas, I focus on comprehensive birth preparation so you feel fully prepared for the experience.

  • No matter where you give birth, I help you create a birth plan, navigate the French healthcare system, and enter labor feeling empowered and informed.

All doula support packages are tailored based on your hospital’s policies and your individual birth preferences.

Honoring Your Journey, Holding Space for Your Transformation

I have had the absolute honor of supporting so many of my clients through ceremonies and celebrations before and after birth—moments filled with love, intention, and deep meaning.
Sometimes, being an expat means you’re far from family, from your best friends, from the community that would normally gather around you during this time. And yet, you still deserve to be held, honored, and celebrated as you step into this next chapter.

Through my work with Wombs of the World, I have had the privilege of learning from wise, traditional midwives in Ecuador, Mexico, and India, studying ancestral birth and postpartum care practices that center healing, connection, and deep respect for the birthing journey. From rebozo techniques to Closing of the Bones rituals, herbal remedies, and postpartum traditions that nurture both body and spirit, these teachings have shaped how I hold space for transition.

It is from these incredible lineages of wisdom that I pull inspiration, blending tradition with intuition, to help create a ceremony or celebration that feels aligned with you. Whether you are seeking a moment to be surrounded in warmth, love, and community, or a quiet ritual to honor yourself in this transformation, I would love to help you create something deeply meaningful.

Blessingway & Baby Shower Planning

A meaningful alternative to a traditional baby shower—rooted in ritual, storytelling, and connection. Instead of focusing on gifts, we focus on you—your journey, your strength, your community of support. Whether it’s a cozy gathering with close friends or something more elaborate, I help create a space where you feel deeply honored before birth.

If you feel called to celebrate, reflect, or simply be held in this moment of transition, I’d love to support you in creating something special.

Mothering the Mother: The Support You Deserve

Society reveres the pregnant goddess, yet forgets the mother. The moment the baby arrives, the attention shifts—but you still need care, nourishment, and deep support.

A postpartum doula is like the grandmother or auntie of generations past—the person who comes in not just to visit, but to truly take care of you. Whatever that looks like on any given day, I am here to meet you where you are.

8.png

That might mean:

Cooking you a warm, nourishing meal while you take a deep breath, sit down, and let someone else take care of things for a change.

  • Helping you with breastfeeding or bottle feeding—answering questions, troubleshooting latch issues, or just sitting with you in those early, hazy hours of endless feeding.

  • Massaging your neck and feet while you tell me all the things on your mind—the hard stuff, the beautiful moments, the intrusive thoughts you don’t dare say out loud to anyone else.

  • Holding your baby with love and care while you nap, shower, cry, or just stare at the ceiling in silence for five minutes.

  • Folding the mountain of baby laundry, resetting your space, and making sure you have a clean kitchen to walk into.

  • Going out with you for a walk or a coffee, so you don’t have to figure out how to navigate the world with a newborn all on your own.

Why This Work Matters

This is, without a doubt, the most valuable thing I offer. Birth is important—how you birth shapes your postpartum experience. But postpartum itself is the true rite of passage.

If we want thriving families, we need cared-for mothers. My purpose is to mother you so that you can give your baby your all.

You do not need to do this alone. Let yourself be held.

Lindsay D, CO

"There are no words to adequately describe how thankful we are for Charlotte and all that she brought to our pregnancy and birth. She went above and beyond to ensure we were prepared for the arrival of our sweet babe. She didn't skip a beat when we had to suddenly be induced. Despite our birth going against everything we planned, I still look back at the experience with a smile; that is because of this incredible woman and all of her loving, gentle support. My husband and I are forever grateful for our decision to hire Charlotte. Not to mention the nurses and doctor raved about her our entire stay after our birth. She is worth her weight in gold."

Garland M, CO

"My husband and I worked with Charlotte for my first birth experience and it was truly amazing. Charlotte came to our home starting in the third trimester and helped us prepare for the delivery and birth of our baby. She talked us through every stage of labor, and essentially gave us private birth classes in the comfort of our home. We were equipped with all the knowledge we needed to understand what to expect with my birth, not only logistically, but also emotionally. She helped empower me to lean into this magical experience of growing a human, and birthing them, and she also empowered my husband to find his space as my partner in the delivery room. Her knowledge and expertise also helped me to know exactly what our experience in the hospital would look like, including what might happen in the event of an unplanned cesarean. Ultimately, after many hours of laboring and pushing, I did need a c-section. Although this wasn't what I planned or expected, I knew exactly what the doctor and hospital would be doing because of Charlotte's guidance during our prenatal visits. This meant more to me than words can describe. Birth, and especially one that veers off the course you expected can be really intense and scary at times. Having Charlotte as our doula made this wild moment of our lives all the more emotionally safe and beautiful and for that we are both so grateful."

Elizabeth W, NC

"Charlotte was the most amazing support for my partner and myself during what could have been a very scary experience. Her ability to naturally assimilate into our family dynamic was nothing short of perfection! We feel beyond blessed to have had her at the birth of our little one and a part of our story!"

Lauren H, CO

As a first-time mom, Charlotte was so informative and helping to explain the birthing process to me. We went through what would happen from the first contraction to delivery. She helped me understand my rights as a mom and how to speak up for what I needed as well as for my baby. When things took a turn and I had to have my baby via planned cesarean, Charlotte was right there with us supporting in every way she could. From pictures of those first moments with my new family (and gorgeous maternity photos too!) to back rubs and yoga poses to assist with pain from the surgery. Charlotte is a true professional and skilled at her craft. Her calming presence was so helpful to me. I highly recommend her to any new or experienced mama!
